surance Springboard Programme for Internships and Real-world Experiences

What is the SCI-INSPIRE?

In celebration of 50 years of excellence, the Singapore College of Insurance (SCI) proudly introduces INSPIRE. The INSPIRE is the inaugural internship programme by the Singapore College of Insurance for the Insurance Industry. The INSPIRE will look to welcome a fresh group of students to an array of internship opportunities that are tailored for polytechnic students and university undergraduates. Through INSPIRE, young talents will have the chance to explore career paths within the dynamic world of insurance through internships.

The INSPIRE will recruit for both specialist (e.g. claims, underwriting) and generalist (e.g. marketing, legal) roles for participating host companies from the insurance and related industries. There will be a diversified range of host companies including direct insurers (life and general), insurance brokers, reinsurers, and loss adjusting firms.

Interns undergo a structured programme with clear training objectives provided by their mentors and host companies. INSPIRE talent team will closely monitor interns’ feedback and progress via a mid-internship review.

We aim to always ensure that an internship has to be enriching, and knowledgeable. Even if you choose not to return to the industry after your internship (which we hope will be the last thing on your mind), we believe that you will benefit greatly from your internship experience through the following highlights of INSPIRE.

Highlights of INSPIRE

Structured training and industry proficiency by the SCI

As interns of INSPIRE, you will undergo a 2 to 3 days series of structured orientation and induction programme designed by SCI, also known as the Insurance Launchpad. This Launchpad will provide you with an in-depth knowledge and insights into various aspects of the insurance industry. These sessions will be led by industry experts and cover topics such as risk management, underwriting, claims handling, and insurance regulations.

Interns will also be provided with an opportunity to gain the basic certifications in the insurance industry by the end of their internship.

Internship exposure in various exciting roles

The main component of INSPIRE is the internship exposure, where Polytechnic Interns will undergo a 16-week to 24-week internship (depending on school/faculty), and University undergraduates will undergo a 12-week to 16-week internship during the Summer Vacation. Participants will have the opportunity to peek into the insights of the industry and gain real-world experience with leading insurance companies.

This exposure will allow you to explore and take up exciting positions in the respective hiring companies such as Underwriting, Broking, Business Development, Risk Management Claims, Actuarial, and Analyst roles in various departments. As an intern, you will also be able to apply your skills in a professional setting, build industry networks, and understand the day-to-day operations of the insurance industry.

Career Guidance and Mentorship
Participants will have access to industry mentors who will provide career guidance, helping them navigate potential career paths and develop the necessary skills for future success in the insurance sector.

Recognition and Certification
Upon successful completion of the programme, participants will receive a certificate from the Singapore College of Insurance, enhancing their credentials and increasing their employability in the insurance sector.

Who is the INSPIRE for?

INSPIRE is open to all students and undergraduates from all faculties. Suspicious? We’re afraid not. Insurance is a business which requires all lines of professionals to make the job robust – given that all forms of risk is present in every business.

Two examples:
  • Students who have an eye for Fine Art, may find a career as a Specie Underwriter – where you’d manage risks associated with high-value, portable assets. "Specie" in this context refers to valuable items such as Jewellery and gemstones, Fine art and collectibles etc.

  • Students who have keen interest in Maritime, can also find a career in Marine Underwriting – where you’d manage risks associated with marine-related activities. This includes Hull & Machinery, covering physical damage to ships, boats, or other marine vessels. Cargo Insurance, protects goods being transported by sea, covering risks such as theft, damage, or loss etc.

Progamme Structure

The INSPIRE will comprise of a 12-week internship during the summer break. These will include a 2-day SCI Launchpad, a 2-day Certificate in General Insurance certification the following week. Insurance workshops/touchpoints will be greatly reduced for the University track. This will allow undergraduates to focus more on their internships and to gain more exposure in the industry.
